This is our second studio album, it's been quite a journey!
Recorded, mixed, produced, mastered and of course written by ourselves- it's not been easy! We set out with a budget of nothing, but with the intention of creating an album that sounds bigger and better than our debut album 'Kebabylon'. Over the past year and a half we have built a recording studio in an old semi-derelict factory in the urban backstreets of our hometown, Birmingham (UK) on a budget of practically nothing! We begged, borrowed and found enough vintage equipment to record the album the way we wanted to- tracked using an early 1980s Allen and Heath mixer and an array of vintage microphones and rack gear, using an old desktop PC as a tape machine (donated by our kind friend Toby!).
We set out to create a small studio space, which us and our friends could come and hang out and record in, and capture that all important live vibe. We built pretty much everything from scratch- including some of the walls and most of the flooring! Ok it took a fair bit longer than it should have done- possibly a few too many spliff breaks and minor quarrels but the important thing is that we got there, it's still standing and we managed to produce an album!
We wanted to collaborate with some influential local artists on this release, and were lucky enough to work with reggae veteran Cheshire Cat- we'd been a fan of his work since the iconic recordings as vocalist in Electronic/Progressive House outfit Leftfield- you can also catch Cheshire Cat regularly at Club PST in Digbeth! We also worked with our good friend Charlie from the ever popular Brum based folk/rock group The High Horses! Check the harmonica solo on Everything That You Do Is Recorded! Our good friend from Johnny Kowalski and the Sexy Wierdos- Ilias plays percussion throughout (you can also catch Ilias at many of our live shows, if he's not busy with JKSW or the Paradimes)! Rose Ai also appears on guest vocals, who is an amazing performer and can be seen in local political theatre group Banner Theatre as well as at solo shows in and around Brum! There's also a whole heap of mates, mates of mates and strangers on the backing vocals- cheers guys!
Why the name you ask? Well sadly, earlier this year our good friend Dave Wassell passed away, leaving a void that can never be filled in the local music community. He was undoubtedly the best person to have around at any festival/gig/session, and always knew how to raise spirits even at the most tiring of times on tour- whether with his signature hotpot, a beer, a spliff or just a conversation, he was the guy you wanted around! Dave was always very supportive of our band, and of course all of the local underground artists in the UK, and we wanted to dedicate this album to his life and memory. The basement at Dave's was THE place to be after a show, where all of the musicians and friends would gather and party for days, lovingly referred to as the 'Rusty Meathook'! Well, we weren't gonna call our album that, so 'Big Dave's Basement' it is! We hope he would have enjoyed it. What a legend!
So here it is- our second album! We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it, and we can't wait to get out there and tour the f*ck out of it! See you at a show! Malarkey x
